New Zealand and specifically Queenstown is well known for its Southern Hemisphere skiing opportunities and for good reason. Not only are there a number of ski fields to choose from, there is an incredible range to suit everyone from beginners, through to the seriously talented.

The Remarkables

The perfect all round ski field and handily the closest to our front door. We are one of the closest hotels to the well-known Remarkables ski area.

The ski bus leaves from right outside the hotel on the main road, or if you prefer you can drive to the base car park for the Remarkables ski field in exactly 6 minutes. If you are happy and confident driving up the mountain, you can roll out of bed, into the car and be at the base building clicking on your skis (or strapping on your board) in 28 minutes.

The base building itself is family friendly with a large café and bar for those all-important hot chocolates and end of day beers. The runs themselves are wide and sweeping – brilliant for learning. There are also a number of un-pisted areas for the more adventurous among you. Lessons for both adults and children run regularly, morning and afternoon.

Coronet Peak

Just across the valley is Coronet Peak, celebrating its 75th year in operation in 2022. Just as well known for its mountain biking trails in the summer, this spot is a local’s favourite. There is a huge variety of terrain, all with stunning views over the Wakatipu basin. Party animal or music lover? After the kids head home for the day Coronet Peak lights up from 4-9pm for night skiing. Après Ski as only Queenstown knows how. As well as dumping snow, this field is known for dropping beats with some epic music events and concerts run throughout the season.

Music aside, what about the skiing? Enjoy a 462m vertical drop, 280 hectares, 3 chairlifts, a T-bar, 4 surface lifts, 2 restaurants, 2 bars, a gondola, sightseeing and toboggans. Oh and of course, the usual well-equipped rental shop and lessons. Sorted.

Treble Cone

Experienced skiers and those wanting to really get away from it all should head to Treble Cone. The largest of all the ski fields in the South Island, Treble Cone is renowned for its long (often empty) groomed runs, legendary off-piste and unadulterated views over Lake Wanaka. That’s right. Skiing – with lake views.

If you want somewhere to really get lost in the snowy backdrops of the Southern Alps and feel a million miles from civilization this is your spot. Less commercial than the other ski fields, this is where the pros hang out and where you’ll find all New Zealand’s top skiers and boarders come a powder day.

For those with a little bit more of a budget the heli-skiing opportunities in this part of the world are not to be missed. The ultimate way to explore exclusive backcountry terrain. You don’t even necessarily need an incredible amount of experience, with knowledgeable local companies and guides able to gauge your experience level and choose your slopes accordingly. Think sweepings lengths of blue run grade powder basins with no chairlift queues in sight.

The best part of all of these ski fields, is the knowledge that within an hour (or even less if you keep it local) you can be back, enjoying an après ski sipper at Giants Bar & Restaurant. Or even sinking into bed in a plush Mountain View room. Skiing and snowboarding = absolutely epic, wherever you go in the Southern Alps. Taking off those boots, at the end of a long day, and relaxing in absolutely comfort = priceless!
